Do CRB or criminal checks cover all countries or just in Britain?

I was wondering if when you are criminally checked using a CRB or whatever for say the police or teaching as a job or something else do the checks cover other countries and is it easy for British authorities to check internationally? Is it easy to pretend you didn't live outside of Britain on the form?
