If the founders had intended for corporations to have the same rights as natural persons...?

Actually, they don't have all the same rights. Corporations, for example, have no vote. And they do not have freedom of religion. The definition of personhood for corporations is inherited from English common law and incorporated into US law the same way that other aspects of English common law are incorporated.
